I joined Renfrewshire Wide Credit Union as a volunteer in July 2012 because I had been looking for part-time work and wanted something to do during the summer. I had heard of the credit union through my university and thought it would be a good opportunity to get some experience and develop skills in certain areas.
So I thought why not, I will hand in my CV. When the credit union received my CV I was asked to come in for a brief informal interview. During the interview the role was explained to me and I was asked to complete an application form for their records. After a day or two I was contacted and asked when I could start. A very quick and easy process!
On my first day, I received a very warm welcome from staff and throughout my time they were always on hand to help with any problems or questions I had. I had been volunteering for almost 2 years when a part-time job became available and since I had enjoyed volunteering so much I jumped at the chance to apply. I must admit the pay was a bonus too!
The credit union helped me to grow in confidence as I was asked to undertake many tasks that I had never previously tried. The role primarily required me to engage with members for many reasons such as withdrawals, enquiries, etc. Each day is different as the credit union as it is used by many people from different backgrounds for different reasons. This diversity is what makes it enjoyable.
The credit union made me feel part of the team very early on which in turn made the experience of volunteering very worthwhile. I would highly recommend volunteering as it gives you a chance to meet new people and learn skills that you may not normally have had the chance to learn. It is also a great way to get to know your local community and help to provide a vital service for them. I am now currently in a full-time job with the Renfrewshire Wide Credit Union and I love it!
